Information about types of whiskey
What is Blended whisky?
- Blended whisky is a type of whiskey that is blended from various different whiskeys, or a blend of malt whiskey (barley malt) and grain whiskey (barley, rye, corn, wheat).
- Some examples of blended whiskey include Canadian Club, Canadian Mist, Jameson Irish Whisky, Seagram’s Seven, Kessler Whisky, Hibiki, and various blends of Scotch whisky sold under the Johnnie Walker brand.
What is Smoky whisky?
- Smoky whisky is a type of whiskey that has the characteristic smoky flavor of peat when burned from the Islay and Island regions of Scotland. The level of smokiness in the liquor will depend on the duration of exposure between the whiskey and the smoke; the higher the smoke level, the stronger the smoky aroma of the whisky.
- The main ingredients for producing this type of whiskey include: barley, peat (for burning), yeast, and oak barrels (for aging).
- First, the barley will be soaked in water until it germinates. Then it will be burned in a kiln using peat to dry to a moisture content of about 25%.
- During this process, the barley sprouts will be infused with the smoky flavor of the peat. Next, the sprouts will be ground and malted for fermentation and then distilled to blend the smoky flavor and the liquor together.
- The distilled liquor will be aged in oak barrels for at least 8 years according to Scottish law to be called smoky whisky.
You can purchase the 2 types of whiskey Blended whisky and Smoky whisky at stores that sell mixing ingredients or reputable e-commerce sites. When buying, be sure to check the packaging, bottle, and cap for integrity and the expiration date to ensure quality.

How to make a Penicillin Cocktail
-
Mix the cocktail
First, put 20ml of fresh lemon juice, 50ml of Blended Whisky, 20ml of ginger honey syrup, and a little ice (about 2/3 of the shaker) into the shaker.
Then, cover the shaker and shake well for about 20 seconds to blend the mixture.
-
Finish
Put a large ice cube into a Rocks glass, then pour the cocktail mixture into the glass through a strainer to remove the old ice from the shaker.
Next, add 15ml of Smoky Whisky, and garnish with ginger gummy candy on top to complete.
Tip:
- It is advisable to chill the Rocks glass beforehand by placing it in the fridge or freezer; this will help your drink stay cold longer, and the ice will take longer to melt, reducing the dilution of the cocktail’s flavor.
- If you want the Smoky Whisky to separate from the liquor below and float on top, you can slowly pour the whisky into the glass over the back of a spoon. This indirect pouring method will make your drink look more appealing.
-
Final Product
The Penicillin Cocktail has a characteristic smoky aroma from Smoky Whisky, with a refreshing, spicy taste accompanied by a hint of sweetness and sourness from lemon juice and ginger honey. All the flavors blend together to give you an absolutely wonderful drink!
